Classroom Newsy Things
I have started to work with three students at a time to teach standard and metric measuring techniques and unfortunately, I wasn't able to meet with everyone today. What has made most sense to students at this age was to tell them to count the spaces between the inches to get fractions. 1/16th is one space, 1/8 is two spaces, 1/4 is 4 spaces and 1/2 is 8 spaces. It has been a challenge for most to write the whole number and then the fraction of the next inch. For the metric system I am teaching them that every 5 spaces equals 1/2 or .5 and I have also mentioned that every space counts as 1/10th or .1 .2 .3 etc. . Just thought I would let you know how I am going about it at school so helping at home would go more smoothly. Thanks for listening and for your help with this concept.
